Examinations and Regular Visits
Regular visits can prevent major dental problems from occurring. During your visit to all about teeth we will conduct an examination to look for potential gum problems, tooth wear and alignment, tooth decay and we will generally evaluate your overall dental health.
In some cases we may take radiographs of your teeth to check the areas we cannot easily see. Following this, we will professionally clean your teeth to remove plaque and tartar deposits from areas difficult to reach when brushing and flossing.
This appointment gives us the opportunity to address any potential problems in their early stages, thereby minimising the amount of treatment that may be required.
Maintaining Gum Health
Daily brushing and flossing is not only important to avoid decay. At all about teet we are also aiming to assist you in maintaining healthy gum tissue; after all, your gums are the supporting structures holding your teeth in place.
Problems can arise when you fail to floss or brush correctly. In the areas you miss, plaque bacteria hardens into tartar. Tartar can no longer be removed by simple brushing and flossing and can only be removed by a professional dental clean.
Over time, more dangerous types of bacteria can build up within tartar. These bacteria can produce toxins, which irritate and inflame the gums. This condition is known as gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontal disease or bone disease - a condition where bacteria and their toxins invade not only the gums, but also the bone and structures supporting your teeth. This can lead to tooth loss in addition to permanent bone damage and even bone loss, limiting your suitability for restorative treatment such as dental implants.
Treatment is available to stop gum disease although if left untreated for prolonged periods, the damage may be irreversible leading to future oral and general health complications and expense.
Gum Disease and Your Overall Health
There have been many clinical studies that demonstrate a correlation between poor gum health contributing to health concerns in other areas of your body. Studies have shown patients with poor oral health were in a higher risk category for developing heart disease, type ll diabetes and more recently pancreatic and tongue cancer. As it is yet to be proven conclusively to what percentage increase gum disease contributes to these conditions, various research studies are continuing.
At all about teeth we are committed to identifying and treating any dental concerns you may have in the early development stage in order to reduce their impact on your health and quality of life.
Good oral hygiene is essential in the prevention of oral diseases and tooth decay. An effective daily oral hygiene routine, will keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy and your breath fresh.
Your Diet and Tooth Decay
Are you aware that many common foods may be the cause of tooth decay?
When some foods or beverages, especially sticky and sugary snacks and drinks, remain in contact with your tooth enamel for a prolonged period, plaque will develop. Plaque contains bacterium that breaks down the sugar content in substances, producing an acid. This acid has the ability to dissolve the minerals in your tooth enamel, allowing bacteria to enter the softer underlying layers of your tooth; therefore causing what is known as tooth decay or tooth caries.
Soft, sticky and sugary substances such as sweets, biscuits, cakes and soft drinks are more likely to cause you problems. You should avoid snacking on these foods between meals and your teeth should be brushed and flossed to remove plaque and bacteria as soon as possible after consumption of these treats
Nightguards and Mouthguards
For some patients we may be required to offer a little extra protection to assist in maintaining strong, healthy teeth for life. Generally we would offer this protection for two main reasons: Tooth grinding or Sports protection
Nightguards for Tooth Grinding
Tooth grinding, sometimes referred to as Bruxism, can be responsible for the aggressive wear of your teeth. Most patients who suffer from this condition grind their teeth at night and only become aware of their situation when a sleeping partner complains of the noise. In some cases you may complain of symptoms such as sensitive teeth or head and neck pain.
If the grinding has taken place for some time, we can often see telltale signs of the destruction. The teeth may have smooth shiny surfaces and you may suffer from a number of discomforts associated with this condition.
The main concern with grinding is the slow deterioration of your teeth. Often it is difficult to know why individuals grind their teeth; sometimes it can be stress related but often it can be a sign of an uneven bite.
At all about teeth treatment involves careful investigation into why you are grinding. If we are able to stop this, you may find immediate relief. As a protective measure we may suggest a nightguard which is a custom fabricated, thin piece of hardened plastic worn during sleep to avoid further damage to your teeth and offer some relief from associated symptoms such as muscle strain which can result in headaches. Grinding can also cause tooth fractures that then require complex and costly restorative treatment.
Mouthguards for Sports Protection
A mouthguard is designed to help protect the teeth and mouth from trauma associated with a knock or blow during contact sport. If you are a parent or a coach it is important that the use of a mouthguard be encouraged for children and adults alike; they should be worn during both training sessions and competitive sport.
The mouthguards constructed and fitted at all about teeth offer the best protection available against the damage that can occur. Because custom-made mouthguards fit snugly against the teeth and gums, they have the ability to better cushion the impact of a knock to the mouth.
Care for your Mouthguard:
- Store your mouthguard in its protective container.
- Rinse thoroughly before and after use
- Replace your mouthguard regularly; it’s a good idea to have it checked each season.
- Do not leave it in the sun
This investment into your health and safety is a small price to pay as your teeth cannot be replaced. Our Mouthguards are available in a range of colours and we encourage children to consider their mouthguard as an essential piece of sports protection.
